Subject: Join the "Wait Until 8th" Initiative

Hi Parents,

I’m reaching out about an initiative called “Wait Until 8th” that I’m working on with a group of TAS parents. Our goal is to delay giving kids smartphones and access to social media until they’re older. This movement, which started in the U.S., is gaining traction nationwide.

Why? More and more parents are worried about how early exposure to social media, constant internet access, and smartphone addiction can impact kids’ mental health. By signing the pledge, families commit to waiting until the end of 8th grade before considering a smartphone, and until the end of 10th grade before introducing social media.

This is a parent-led initiative, and we’re thrilled to have the support of Ms. Jennifer Fisher (Grade 5 counselor) as well as the PTA, which is working on educational resources and workshops about technology use.

At TAS, many kids receive their first smartphone after Grade 5—or even earlier. In the U.S., the average age is just 10. We want to spark conversations at the lower school level so parents are informed and confident when deciding what’s best for their family.

This isn’t about judging anyone’s choices. It’s about creating a supportive community for parents who choose to wait. For those needing a way to stay connected with their kids, basic phones or watches with calling and texting features are great alternatives.

My family is clear on our tech and social media approach, but the social pressure is real. This pledge helps like-minded parents connect and sends the message: “Not all kids have smartphones.” It takes a village to raise kids—and that’s especially true in today’s digital world.

If this resonates with you, join us! Sign the pledge and share this message with other parents. If it’s not for you, no problem at all—I completely understand.

Thanks for considering,
